The Český Fousek is a breed of versatile hunting dog from the Czech Republic traditionally used for pointing and retrieving. The name český fousek directly translates from Czech as "Czech whiskered." Both names apply to both sexes, but while the male is called Český Fousek (roughly "Bohemian bearded"), the female carries a traditional term Česká Fouska. The breed belongs to the griffon hunting dog category and has a beard and moustache ("facial furnishings") typical of wirehaired breeds. Female and male dogs of this breed can vary greatly in size, with the weight difference being up to 11 kg (24 lbs).

History

The Český Fousek is a relative newcomer to the world of wirehaired versatile hunting dogs compared to many other European breeds. Its standards were established by the mid-19th century and gained recognition as an official breed after World War II. The breed almost went extinct in the 1920s but was revived through selective breeding with neighboring versatile hunting breeds. However, its acceptance by the FCI faced challenges, particularly from the German Kennel Club (Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen), which argued that the breed’s coat type differed only slightly from the wirehaired Stichelhaar. A similar situation arose in the US in the 1980s and 1990s, leading to splits among members and the formation of two separate clubs: Cesky Fousek North America (formerly Bohemian Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Club of America) and the American Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Association. The foundation stock of the Slovak Rough-haired Pointer is partially derived from Český Fousek individuals.
